Anti-Stat and Static Shield Products
Despite the similar names anti-stat and static shield products are not interchangeable.
Anti-stat, which comes in a bright pink hue, is used to prevent static buildup but does not protect from electrostatic discharge (ESD). Anti-stat is best used for items such as nuts, bolts, and other metal parts that might create unwanted static with normal poly bags but are not sensitive to static.
Static shield products prevent the buildup of static electricity (anti-stat properties) and they protect from electrostatic discharge (ESD). Unlike anti-stat bags, static shielding bags protect components from static charges both inside and outside of the bag.
In order to provide ESD protection, the material is fashioned into a bag or enclosure of some sort and products are sealed inside the bag. No seal means there is no guarantee of protection. Make sure sharp objects are padded because any puncture to the bag could render it useless.
Keep in mind, both static shield and anti-stat bags have a shelf life of about 1 year.
Which one should you use?
All electronic components such as circuit boards, hard drives, sound cards, etc. should be shipped in a static shielding bag.
If you are not storing or shipping electronic components that can be ruined by static but your products might be shipped to an area that is static controlled, you can go with the pink anti-stat bags.
If you are still unsure of which bag would be right for you, give us a call.
